Shanghai 瀟灑走一回: 住宿篇一

為了方便和體驗, I stayed in three different hotels.

First Hotel: The St. Regis Shanghai (上海瑞吉紅塔大酒店)
Location:
It is situated in Pudong area.

Room & amenities:
The room is huge! I think St. Regis has one of the largest standard room in Shanghai. It is 48 sqm. My room has a city view. The bed is huge too and comfortable. But I dun like the pillow. It is too flat and soft. I need to pile up two pillows to sleep. You get not 1 or 2 complimentary bottle waters but 6 at anytime. This is handy as August weather is a killer! You have a large LCD TV, Bose CD player, a nice day bed, a nice couch, a working desk with Herman Miller Aeron Chair. Fresh fruits (4 pieces) everyday. Complimentary English newspaper. The only downside is no complimentary internet in the room. But you can go to the lobby to use the complimentary wireless internet.

Bathroom & amenities:
The bathroom is also very big. Standard items are provided. Toothbrush, comb to name a few. But I like one item that is not so standard. They provide washing powder! This is handy as I can wash my used socks etc.. to make them smell nicer when I pack them. The towel is huge and good. Bathing toiletries are from Ashford & Hall. Rain shower is good.

Service:
St. Regis is said to be the only hotel that has 24 hours butler service. I have asked them to make me a pot of chinese tea and run some errands. Their butler service is fast, prompt and friendly. Many of their staffs are rather friendly. Even the chef of their famous Danieli's Italian Restaurant greeted me when I happened to run into him in the lift. This hotel provides down service which I like. When I come back hotel every night, the room is prepared for sleeping. They even leave a small chocolate on the pillow for you.

Facilities:
They have swimming pool, jacuzzi, a 24 hours Gym and game room for your to play pool. It is pretty quiet and so it is really enjoyable. The lobby has free wifi and it is always very quiet. So you can access the internet with peace. There is also a small counter in the lobby that attend to your enquires regarding anything about Expo.

Surrounding:
I particularly like it cos it is rather quiet. There are some nice local eateries and a 24 hour Family Mart convenience store just across the street. If you do not take breakfast in hotel, you can go opposite the hotel and try the Yonghe soybean breakfast. It costs about RMB15. Nearest metro station is Pudian Road Station which is about a 5 to 10 mins walk.

Overall, this hotel is good. Though I did not experience any very out of this world treatment, the overall experience is a positive one. However, one negative thing about this hotel is that every night (around 11pm+) I walk back to the hotel, at the car porch area of the hotel, I will always be pestered by pimps asking me if I wanted massage. But if you take a cab back to hotel, you will not encounter such thing. This is rather annoying. So if the hotel can do something about this, this hotel will be perfect!

Shanghai 瀟灑走一回: 介紹篇

上海 is a 國際大都市 and have a 18M populations. It is a 繁華城市。 Everywhere looks clean and nice. But it is 人山人海 everywhere and the people there always 爭先恐後﹗I went to Shanghai mainly to visit the 遠近馳名的 Shanghai Expo.

1. 上海怎樣去?
I took a straight flight by Singapore Airlines and the journey took about 5 hours. China Eastern airline also flies there but the timing is not as good.

2. How to get to Shanghai downtown from airport?
You can take a bus but I took the 磁懸浮 train from the airport. It is traveling very fast! The top speed hit 430km/h and reached the Longyang station in 7 mins. Then, from there you can take a cab to the downtown city for about 20 mins. 磁懸浮 costs RMB80 to and fro airport.

3. How is the weather in August?
It is a killer!! This time of the year is Summer season and it actually hits 40 degree when I was there! So I suggest you might want to go after October where weather is a bit cooler.

4. How to get around in Shanghai?
You can catch a cab or the subway. Though cab is affordable and fast, I prefer to travel by subway as it is fun but crowded at times. Cab is about RMB20 for a 15 mins ride. Subway is RMB3 for a few stations. All subway stations have a x-ray machine for security checks. Dunno if this is for Expo period only.

Free 名牌 cake

I have a portfolio in my company which I held for 2 years. After holding on this position for 2 years, I decided it is time to let go. This portfolio is really too time consuming! I have no time to focus on other things. My boss finally let me go and gave me a 名牌 cake for 答謝我的貢獻。Haa!! The cake is a mango cake from Bakerzin and it tastes great!!

東北風味 in Chinatown

There are two exchange students finishing their attachment and leaving soon. Hence, we decided to 替他們餞行 at a nice Chinese food stall in Chinatown. It is selling 東北菜。I always open to different kind of 風味 and this time round we made a good choice. The food we ordered are very delicious. The restaurant is extremely crowded and they actually 破例 to let us make a reservation. They also selling 哈爾濱啤酒。This 哈啤 tastes sweet and nice.

Bank of China 麻煩

I happen to get 2 free tickets from Bank of China credit card. So naturally I expect them to send me a letter of redemption. After waiting for almost 3 weeks, I got nothing. So I call them up and ask. They said it is ready for redemption and need to go down to their Raffles branch to collect during weekdays working hours!! Then I call them up again to arrange if I can authorize anyone to collect on my behalf but the person in charge not around. Any way, after all the 麻煩 things, finally someone help me to collect. I feel this whole collection episode shows that they lack of a 機製 for such redemption. No clear information at all!! They need to improve on this. Really makes me think twice on redeeming things from them.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice 適合小孩的電影

I love fantasy show and of cos I will not miss The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The story plot is quite 熟口熟臉 and simple. Luckily, the special effects and flow of story are rather good. The show has one of my favorite actress, Monica Bellucci. But 美中不足 is that she only appears not more than 15 mins throughout the show! Wasted!! Overall, this show is rather 適合小孩子。

來一個 Hand Burger

漢堡包 you might eat a lot in many places but in a 漢堡包專賣店 (not fast food chain) might not be everyday affair. This shop The Hand Burger specializes in 漢堡包 and is quite interesting. It has quite a number of 漢堡包 to choose from ranging beef, chicken, seafood, vegetarian, pork etc.. You can even customized your own burger! I ordered pumpkin & crab bisque Soup and the duck confit burger. The burger portion is quite a good size. Not too big and not too small. The duck meat is quite tender too. As for the soup, it is quite thick but the pumpkin taste is a bit lacking.

Chinatown 美食街

牛車水 has a 美食街 which has many nice food. It is a 大排檔 and you can get to taste the different types of 小吃。I ordered a 排骨面 at 史密斯街蝦面。It is quite a generous portion. The soup is nice and meat is tender. But it is still a tourist spot so the price is not cheap.

韓流延燒食物 BBQ Chicken

Singapore is overwhelmed by 韓流 in terms of 韓劇。But another 韓流 has overwhelmed Singapore in terms of Korean food. One of their largest chain BBQ Chicken has landed in here and I went to their West Coast Plaza outlet. 顧名思義﹐they are experts in chicken. I have ordered one of their chicken set lunch which is quite 划算。It has a soup, a drink, a main course and dessert. The chicken is very tender and succulent. Their 密制 sauce is really very nice and tasty. 口感 quite good.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 比第二集精彩

看過 2nd episode 之後﹐I am quite reluctant to watch the 3rd episode as 2nd episode is simply too boring. After watching The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, I find it not so bad afterall. It is now more exciting, more actions and less 談情說愛。Overall, the show is quite 緊湊。

iPod Nano 死翹翹

I was spring cleaning and happened to dig out my relatively new iPod nano mp3 player which I have only used 三次。So I decided to make full use of it. But guess what? The battery cannot be charged!!! But if you power it by computer or electricity, it can run. So what is the use of a iPod nano if it is not mobile anymore? I never expect Apple product is that lousy. Easily dead. Lucky it is a free gift. If I spend money on it, I will jump!! That is why I always said Apple is 好看不好吃。

讓人驚嘆的 Music Software

Have you ever had such experience that you heard of a song somewhere and desperately trying to find out the name of this song? 救星 is here! I have come across two song recognition software which 能幫助你。They are Shazam and Midomi. Both have window mobile based version and you can easily installed in your handphone. Whenever you hear a nice song which you dunno the name, just run your application over your data plan, grab the song and have it analyzed to return you the name of the song and who sings it. The 準確率 is quite high! Amazing! Go try it.

Langkawi 走一走: 中

So this time round where did we go? 和上次一樣﹐we rented a car as this is the easiest way to explored Langkawi.

Eagle Square
Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) is the first sight that greets you when you arrive at Langkawi island by the sea. Dataran Lang has a huge sculpture of an eagle poised proudly facing the sea, welcoming you to this mystical island.

Air Terjun Temurun
The Temurun waterfalls are conveniently located in the Mat Cincang Nature Park of Datai, offering the ‘hot’ visitor refreshing waters from the mountains.

Durian Perangin Falls
This waterfall is located on the northern slope of Gunung Raya, the highest mountain of Langkawi.

Pantai Pasir Hitam
Pantai Pasir Hitam or Black Sand Beach is a mixture of black sand and normal sand. Unlike other black-sand beaches which might be due to iron oxide.

Kuah Town
Kuah is the capitol of this island and is bustling with activities. Kuah Town has many duty free shops which you can buy local products and have nice good food.

Pasar Malam
Pasar Malam or night market is a place where all the locals gather, selling daily use goods and local Malay foods. This kind of night market is available 5 nights a week but in deferent locations such as Kuah Town, Kedawang, Ulu Melaka, Air Hangat, Padang Matsirat. The largest night market which I went is held in Kuah Town every Saturday and Wednesday at 7.00pm to 11.00pm.
